Monuments of Rethymnon, which is what is worth visiting

Rethymnon building reflects its turbulent history. You will find here a lot of relics from the Byzantine period, but also from the Ottoman era buildings that give the city an oriental character. The city is dominated huge Fortezza, which is a defensive structure, dating from the Byzantine period. This is probably the most recognizable building element of Rethymnon. The fortress was built on the hill of Palaiokastro (Old Castle) in 1590 and was intended to protect the inhabitants against the Turks. Today, the fortress is open to visitors between 8: 00-19: 00. The admission ticket costs about 4 euros. It even go there for the view, which offers views of the walls of the building. Inside the fortress is Sultan Ibrahim Mosque. The Venetian Harbour is another Fortezzy showcase the city - very often the theme of the postcards. Dates from the thirteenth century, and the crowning characteristic harbor lighthouse was built by the Turks in the seventeenth century. The harbor is a mass of pubs and restaurants. Rimondi fountain located in the square of Platanos, was built in 1626 by the Venetian governor Rimondi. The fountain has the form of a wall with 4 columns. Water flows from the lion heads. Venetian gate Porta Megali today is only a remnant of the former, the central gate of Rethymnon. Megali Porta literally means big door. Preserved the Loggia of the sixteenth century. In ancient times it was a building of significant importance - it is here the city authorities met to discuss political and economic issues. During the Turkish occupation created here mosque - minarets were built up, which were then demolished in 1930. It is worth seeing the Church of St. Francis, dating from the Byzantine period, built in Renaissance style. Noteworthy is richly decorated entrance. Against the background of a Venetian building stands out and looks very interesting Mosque Neratzes. In the days of the Venetian building was a church, which in 1657 was converted into a mosque by the Turks Neratze. The roof was replaced by three domes, and existing to this day minaret was built only in 1890. Today, the building hosts concerts and performances. The entire old town of Rethymnon is sown houses and houses dating from the time of Venetian. Some of them are newly renovated and beautifully illuminated. But there are also those that are just begging for a renovation - destroyed, neglected. Admittedly, the latter also create a unique atmosphere of the city - give it a mystery.
