Today Santorini

Today Santorini impresses with contrast white building houses on a background of black volcanic sand slopes and beaches covering. Santorini is one of the most famous islands of the Cyclades. The severity of landscapes, breathtaking vistas, multicolored beaches formed by lava and the deep blue sea create an impressive image of beauty. Currently, Santorini lives approx. 7 thousand. permanent residents who live mainly from tourists who during very frequently visit the place. In addition, the island is known for its exports of sweet wines, volcanic soil, pumice and sweet tomatoes. The main cities are Fira (the capital) and Ia. Other areas of importance for tourists is Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, Pyrgos and Monolithos. Despite the fertile volcanic soil of Santorini vegetation is scarce and there are no forests - the reason is lack of water; on the island there is only one spring with fresh water and it is not used on a large scale, is commonly used with water odsalanej and imported from other islands. The magnificent landscape of the island is beautifully blended into the traditional Greek buildings - a small white houses with blue roofs. Even modern buildings are nice and stylish. Santorini not meet the high skyscrapers, perishable climate of the island. The highest elevation of the island (approx. 500 m) is the monastery of Profitis Ilias and NATO radar station. On the slope of the mountain is a very picturesque village of Pyrgos, while the other side of the ridge descends to the beautiful Mesa Vouno headland separating Kamari and Perissa, on which are the ruins of Ancient Thira.
