Capital of Crete
Heraklion (Iraklion, Irakleio, Ηράκλειο / ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ) is the largest city and also the capital of Crete. There is one of two international airports on the island. Heraklion does not have too many historic buildings, and on his tour just to spend 3-4 hours. Noteworthy is pretty Venetian harbor, where the morning fishing boats returning influence from the sea. On a promontory stands surrounding Venetian Fortress Koules with the image of the lion of St. Mark. From here you can see antique Arsenals. From the roundabout located on the harbor promenade runs along which is located most interesting buildings in the city. Within a few minutes you can see the church of Agios Titos, loggia, square Venizelou, St. Stephen's Basilica. Mark, Fountain Morozini. A little further is Platia Kornarou with the old hammam and Bembo Fountain, where you should take a right to get to Agia Ekaterinis Freedom Square, where they stand three churches - Agios Minas church, the church of Agia Ekaterinis (now the Museum of Icons), and the dominant cathedral with beautiful, decorative towers. Its interior looks equally impressive - walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes, and on top of huge chandeliers hang. You can still go to Freedom Square, where stands the Statue of Liberty. Located next to the Archaeological Museum. Another interesting place is the Historical Museum, which features a fountain Idomeneo. You can also drive up to the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis, Greek poet and novelist, and also to see one of the city gates and fragments of walls.
It's a place where they will feel perfectly shoppers. The city center is filled with boutiques famous international brands.
